So, some of you may know that I have a history of heart palpitations. Those in the medical world, this would be PVCs. I've been dealing with this since I was a teenager, got worse in nursing school (with stress and all), and I had it checked out when I graduated from school, hense why we know that it's PVCs (I wore I holter monitor for a month). Well, sometimes I have runs of PVCs; as in it's not just 1 or 2 beats in a row, it's several of these abnormal beats. It's not been an issue at all in the past 2-3 years. Well, the last week or two, the frequency has increased and the runs of these have gotten harder to break. Normally, I can deep breathe and cough, and it goes back to a normal rhythm. Lately, it's been harder to break, but it does after several seconds.

Well today at work after my lunch break, I noticed that my heart was beating really fast. It wasn't all of a sudden, it was just something that I noticed. I sat there for a few minutes thinking it would go away. Well it didn't. It wasn't PVCs and I knew it because I know how they feel in my chest as I've been dealing with that for a while. This just felt like a fast heart rate. So, I'm feeling a little weird, not too bad though (I'm not dizzy or anything), and I hook myself up to the monitor to see what my heart rate is. It's 145 beats/min. Normal is 60-100...this pregnancy I usually stay in the 90s, occasionally I'll increase to the low 100s. Nothing abnormal. So, I go and sit down. It's not getting any better. My charge nurse walks by and I tell her my heart rate is really fast. She hooks me back up to the monitor and at this point it is 150 beats/min. I don't feel that short of breath...just working harder (obviously). So she has bee hold my breath for a few seconds (which is hard to do) and deep breathe, etc. It starts to slow and then drops back to my normal heart rate in the 90s. The entire episode lasted about 10 minutes. To the medical ppl: I guess it was SVT? It didn't convert like you normally see...the rate just went down slowly.

I wasn't going to call my doctor, but I figured if it happened again it should be looked into, so I went ahead and called just to give them a heads up. Well, they want to check some lab work in the morning and see me after that. So, they are going to check my electrolytes and my thyroid, as deficiency in these can cause my heart to do what it did today (and in the past couple of weeks).

SOOOO...guess I'll be doing that in the morning. I'm going to sleep in first though.

Update ya tomorrow on it.
